Description

In the 21st Century, there are clear challenges that face all religions including that of Christianity. As I considered the challenges I choose to share about secularization, which means the process in which religion loses social and cultural significance. In secularized societies faith lacks cultural authority, and religious organizations have little social power. Secularization occurs when a culture moves from being religious to nonreligious. As shared by Mohler (2008), Christian roots have become more distant within society because of secularization and the essence of secularization is the fact that the culture no longer depends upon Christian symbols, morals, principles, or practices. According to Massaro (2017), secularization does not mean that spirituality will disappear, but rather that spirituality and religion will take on a more subjective role that is relegated to personal choice. As societies modernize, they become less religious. According to Herriot (2018), religion is one of the major modern functional social systems and fundamentalists are one of the largest impediments to religion today because they directly confront modern society. In today's world, many people associate themselves as Christians without following or knowing what the scriptures of Christianity are. Where only portions of the religion are followed and practice, but not all of them are. For example, one who believes in God and Jesus Christ and that if one lives a good life they will find salvation however they do not know the rationale from scripture as to why. The traditional, Christian faith is challenged because social norms of life have shifted. Religion has become socially incoherent, children no longer accept their family’s faith because with modernization religion is losing the key components to understanding, accepting, and practicing the Christian faith. Religion fails to make public, objective claims upon us, and has become privatized.
