TELEHEALTH AND NURSING INFORMATICS
Telehealth and Nursing Informatics
Introduction
Telehealth is the utilization of telecommunications technologies and electronic
information to support health administration and public health, professional and patient healthrelated education, and inaccessible clinical healthcare. Telehealth permits healthcare
professional’s collaboration to offer healthcare services across various distances and settings.
The usage of telemedicine ranges from conferencing between physicians to video chat between
doctor and patient to conferencing between clinicians and related health professionals (physical
therapists or nutritionist) to offering recorded or live presentations to groups of clients who ate
separated geographically. The major obstacle to the adoption of telehealth widely is the
reimbursement of the provider. Presently, each caring episode is monetized; visits translate to
increased cost. The security and privacy of telehealth are governed by the HITECH (Health
Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (Act)) and HIPAA (Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act).
Utilization of Telehealth
Delivery systems of healthcare in rural areas struggle to sustain adequate numbers of
clinical employees to care for their client populations. The specialists in medical care are in short
supply. Although twenty percent of the population in the United States lives in rural areas, only
ten percent of specialists and nine percent of physicians practice in these locations. Lack of
access to specialists in medicine is not a problem in rural areas. Most urban locations do possess
enough specialists to avail care in aspects such as stroke care and dermatology. Researches have

indicated that telehealth can advance specialty in locations that are underserved and among
vulnerable populations such as nursing home-based residents and inmates.
The applications of Telehealth have been comprehended, established, and deployed in
various clinical settings, yet their utilization supporting evidence has been evolving slowly.
There are significant questions that are unanswered about the effectiveness, efficacy, and value
of these technologies. Addition to these inquiries, difficulty in outlining the business case of
telehealth’s concerns about security and privacy, lack of reciprocity, and reimbursement issues in
State medical licensing are amongst the matters that have disadvantaged wide adoption of
telehealth in the country. Responding to some of the inquiries about effectiveness, efficacy, and
value of telehealth and to research barriers to adoption and implementation of these innovations,
various Federal agencies, comprising Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and
private companies are currently providing revenue for telehealth research.
Proposals for Implementation of Telehealth
Evaluate Needs
Evaluation of requirement is a vital step in the planning of telehealth. Choices made in
this step will have an impact on the entire program. The process should first begin by first
considering the patients to be served. Clients with chronic infections such as congestive heart
and diabetes are in requirement of almost constant care (Mars & Scott, 2017). Medical services
are supposed to be available in their home and also the community to control their diseases and
to prevent co-morbidity and exacerbation. Telehealth can provide specialty services of healthcare
to the citizens of societies in need.
