Analysis and evaluation of hazards and risks is a necessary activity in an organization,
business premise, industrial environment or any other environment in which man lives and/or
operates, such as the aviation industry. The purpose of the activity is to predict and mitigates losses
that would have occurred if no actions were taken, thus it is a requisite activity for maintaining
safety. Hazard is anything that can cause injury to people, destruction of property or any other
form of harm to man and his belongings (Western Sydney, 2017). It may be chemicals emitted
from an industry, tools, and equipment used in the workplace, practices in an enterprise, a
condition of work or it may be related to the behavior of workers in their work environment.
Analysis and evaluation of hazards is however not realistic if not accompanied by an
evaluation of risks. Risk refers to the likelihood that harm could occur from the hazards in the
environment (Western Sidney, 2017). The process of analyzing and evaluating hazards and risks
has to be rigorous, predictive and systematic so as to yield reliable information that can be used to
proactively manage future safety scenarios.
