Requirement for RNP Assignment: Please remember your RNP packets should include all of the following: • • • • One (1) cover memo to your instructor One (1) routine and positive message One (1) negative message One (1) persuasive message And your packet must also include one message “genre” type in each of the three categories listed below: • • • One (1) business letter One (1) business email Your choice: One (1) business memo, or electronic or social media of equivalent length (most likely a blog post text with visuals, podcast transcript, etc.—)* o *Note: IMs, text messages, and other brief message types will not be complex enough to meet the requirements of this assignment) Remember, writing effective business messages requires careful consideration of the genre in which the message is delivered. Choose appropriate and advantageous formats for each of your messages and make sure to explain the reasoning behind your genre choices in the cover memo. When I am grading this project, I will look for the following Items: The cover memo should identify the following: • • the particular “case” each message is responding to -Identify chapter and case # the rhetorical choices and strategies you employed in composing each message o Who is the audience for each? o How did you appeal to that audience? o What did you write that achieved your purpose? o What was your purpose? • • any deviations from mainstream genre or rhetorical norms [or, conventions] the rationale behind those rhetorical choices, strategies, and deviations— ie: audience, purpose and context • o You must offer explanations and examples. RNP Messages should include: • • One of the messages must be based upon cases found in the “Writing Routine and Positive Messages (Chapter 8) Cases” One of the messages must be based upon the “Writing Negative Messages (Chapter 9) Cases” DISCUSSION AND RESPONSE • • One of the messages must be based upon the “Writing Persuasive Messages (Chapter 10) Cases” Beyond these requirements, you are free to select your own particular “cases” and which format is most appropriate to communicate them. (This means you may mix and match cases in the chapters to genres- not that you can completely make up your own senarios) 2

For this assignment, I have followed the question guide given and the course material
provided. I have presented the routine and positive message as a blog post. The audience for this
question, it is based on a company setting, and I the social media modifier. I appealed to the
audience by the use of catchy phrases, but still maintaining my authority as the social media
manager, on my expectations. The purpose was to caution on social media misuse from
employees to senior managers. I reminded them to keep the company image, stop picking fights
with each other and competitors, and upload of edited Youtube videos.

For the Persuasive message-in the form of an Email. I wrote to Departmental manager on
the unsuccessful self-managed works programs and while asking for a promotion to supervisor
level from the manager. The audience is the Departmental manager, and I wrote a persuasive
email on why they need a supervisor. I used the company not meeting company goals to ensure
she took my suggestions seriously and based my arguments on production quantities decreasing.
For this, I was giving unsolicited advice in the hope of a promotion to supervisor level.

The last is the negative message which was in the form of a letter. Ms. Johnson had
written requesting a refund for her missed flight. I wrote Ms. Johnson a letter on why her missed
flight would not be refunded. I used the indirect method, buffered her first. I ensured she
understood the circumstances under which she can get a refund. After applying for a refund a
week past, her application was considered unsuccessful. I then referred her to our website to
check on offers available. I closed off any future discussion on the same and did not implicate
the company policy.

Blog post (routine and positive message)
They say no publicity is bad publicity. That said I have to caution on the use or misuse of
social media. The company’s adoption of social media is commendable. At the beginning of the
year, I encouraged the adoption of social media, and I am pleased to report the individual
postings have gone up, and so have the company’s mentions.
A few things that are published on social media are portraying the company in a negative
light. First, before posting on social media please check on the typos. I know it is a more
informal form of reporting, and it is on your timeline. But in keeping up the right image of the
company, especially on mentions, please check grammar and typos before posting.
Additionally, company strategies are private matters and so should be treated. Let us stop
publicizing the information as our competitors are also online and can quickly get access to the
information we post. Even on engagement with our colleagues, let us keep it professional. We
should not air our dirty linens in public. As I said, we don’t know who is online, and our private
and company information should be kept as such.

Also, check on what you are posting. If you cannot say to the other person the same face
to face, refrain from posting. The companies social media handle should not wag any wars with
competitors or internally. Videos posted on YouTube should also be edited in line with the
company’s image. Unedited content, show our disorganized nature and lack of necessary skills.
If you are not sure of anything, please check with me before posting.
Lastly, I will be deleting anything posted on the company’s social media handle that does
not meet the minimum requirements I have listed above. I, as the social media influencer of the
company, after consultation with the senior managers, will be holding training on the successful
use of social media at a later date to be communicated. For now, keep it professional and keep
interacting.

Subject: Need for Supervisor
Ms Cynthia,

Since the company adopted the new self-managed program, our work output has decreased in the
last few months. I provide comparisons of production quantities output before the adoption of the
program and the previous three months after the policy adoption.

Before the change, our production was 20,000 per batch of the products leaving the premises
daily with the number falling to 18,000 per quantity daily. If this trend continues, the company’s
total output at the end of the year will fall short of expectations. The company will production
quantity will decrease by over 10% by the end of the year.

In addition to the fall in production, there have been production lines stalling from the less
organized workflow. If this continues, chaos will ...
