CRIME OCCURRENCE PREVENTION Crime Occurrence Prevention Shelly McKee AJS514 05/09/19 STEVE NANCE 1 CRIME OCCURRENCE PREVENTION 2 Criminal Behaviors In terms of criminal behavior, there are three prominent views which include consensus view, conflict view and the interactionist view. According to consensus view, crime is an illegal behavior that is defined by the existing criminal law. On the other hand, conflict view holds that crime is the behavior defined so that the economically powerful people to control much control over the society. However, interactionist views portray criminal as relativistic, constantly changing the concept which reflects the current moral values society (Roberts, A. 2007). The criminologists use different research methods to collect information that shed on the criminal behavior. Current Trends in Crime Rate The rate of violent crimes, especially homicides, have increased some cities hence raising broad concerns about the decreasing the levels of public safety. At national level, the violent crimes and homicides registered a high number from 2014 to 2015 in 48 largest cities. Also, the level of crime rate increased significantly from 2015 to 2016 but the two rates remain at almost historical lows. The homicide and violent crime rates for 48 largest cities in U.S generally followed the national level trends with few exceptions. For instance, the violent crime rate in the cities 0.5 to 1 million people and 0.25-0.5 million people decreased from the year 2014 to 2015 (Roberts, A. 2007). However, homicide rates in small cities of 50,000 to 100,000 populations decreased from the year 2015 to 2016. It is, however, evident that some largest cities in the U.S witnessed increase in violent crime rates and homicide from the year 2014 to 2015 or from the year 2015 to 2016. The recent increase in homicide and violent crime rates in cities has received more attention from the authorities. CRIME OCCURRENCE PREVENTION 3 Factors influencing crime rate Social, economic and environmental factors influence the rate of violent crimes and homicides in the country. The level of social increases crime rates in the country. They include school dropouts, number of single parent families, and level of ethnic conflict and teenage pregnancies. The crime rates increase with lack of welfare to the children. Also, the poor economy increase crime rates because of increased unemployment of the youths (Leape, L. L. (2002). The citizens are idle hence turning to crime in order to get finance for basic commodities. Other factors influencing crime rate include; drug abuse, availability of firearms, increased poverty, and use of unapproved medicine, legalizing abortion, and advanced technology. Investigating Occurrence of Crime through Research and Theory Development The occurrence of crime continues to change in its nature because of the advanced technology in the whole world. Some of the crime happens through internet which involves conning of the victims, fraud, online bullying and pornography. Through research, I will be able to investigate criminal activities in the major cities in the United States. First, I will use interviewing method which is most effective. I will be organizing special interviews with the victims and witnesses to get more information on criminal activities in the country. Furthermore, I will organize some sessions with the suspects and those already sentenced to get their reason for taking part in crime (Maddan, S. 2015). On the other hand, I will visit some of the police stations to perusing the reports of criminal activities in their possession as a investigate occurrence of crime in the country. The theory of development will help me in identifying all CRIME OCCURRENCE PREVENTION 4 victims, witnesses, and possible suspects. I will then accurately document criminal event, document investigative actions and develop theories on how exactly the crime took place. Sources of Crime Data In the United States, the major source of crime statistics is Uniform Crime Reports and National Incident Based Reporting Systems (NIBRS). The Uniform Crime Reports focus on the index crimes by making property crime and violent crime as part one offense. The violent crimes include rape, aggravated assault, and robbery and murder whereas property crimes include burglary, motor-vehicle theft, and arson. The advantage of UCR is that it is a primary source of crime data and it is used to study factors known to influence type of crime activities taking place from one place to another (Major, V. L., & Propheter, S. K. 2000). The information can be utilized for international comparison that determines how different countries interpret criminal behavior. However, the UCR underestimate actual number of crimes hence not being able to reflect crime rates accurately. The NIBRS is the incident based system that is utilized by law enforcers in the United States to collect and report information on crimes. The federal, state and local agencies generate the information from the NIBRIS management systems. The benefit of NIBRS is its in-depth than summary based systems which are used as alternatives. It has more information on all crimes being committed that help law enforcers to reduce crime rates (Maddan, S. 2015). However, it has setbacks. The types of criminal behaviors differ from one state to another. This weakens and hinders the influence of this program in provision of data to the agencies. The automated system is complex and the use of data is a difficult task for the officers enforcing law. CRIME OCCURRENCE PREVENTION 5 Also, they are dependent on the reported crimes and arrest from police department. This reduces scope of information retrieved by different users. Importance of Crime Research in Development of Recidivism Reduction Strategies Research is important in crime prevention because it strengthens the strategies devised by law enforcement officers. Through research, crime prevention agencies know that some practices and policies are able to reduce recidivism. They include the use of risk and need assessment to inform the case management (Maddan, S. 2015). Research shows that some correctional programs with greatest impacts on recidivism deals with people based on their risk of repeating a crime. In conclusion, criminal behaviors can be prevented by primarily looking at the factors which influence crime rate. The government is supposed to ensure all children access education and purpose to reduce the level of poverty in the country. CRIME OCCURRENCE PREVENTION 6 References Leape, L. L. (2002).
