Film 3440J: Practice of Film Criticism Spring 2016
Write a complete essay on any of the films we have watched this semester. Your essay should be 3-5 pages long 12 point font, double spaced.
Remember that your essay should use 1-2 methodological approaches and should include some outside research.
You must cite any outside sources you use in the essay.
What should the essay include?
1. A strong thesis.
2. A clear methodology used to approach the essay.
3. Outside research (at least 2 sources)
4. Textual evidence (including description of narrative, character, mise-en-scene,
cinematography, and editing).
5. Proper terminology.

Bicycle Thieves
In his critically acclaimed film “Bicycle Thieves,” Vittorio De Sica uses the life of the
average father and husband in Italy at the time to address some of the effects of the Second
World War on the members of the lower classes in society. De Sica uses different elements,
symbols, and techniques to highlight this fact. He, for instance, uses cinematography to enhance
different scenes such that they draw the viewer to the extreme poverty levels in Italy at the time
and its detrimental physical and psychological effects on families at the time. A critical
evaluation of the film using the realist and formalist methodologies reveals that De Sica expertly
combines different elements to bring out the detrimental impact of the Second World War on
society, particularly the lower classes, in Italy.
An evaluation of “Bicycle Thieves” using the realist approach reveals the deplorable
living conditions to which the Second World War subjected the poor in Italy. Furthermore, it
