Critical Summary of Maya
Chapter 1
The story starts with the news of the day on September 18, 1924 in the New York Times. Other
than the news, the reader is introduced to James, a character whom they barely know. First, they
understand that he is on a ship and he had come back to Louisville to see a person named Wolf
about some money. Furthermore, the reader learns that James is 64 years old and he lost a son
and was also robbed by another character named Niall. James’ trip to Louisville to see Wolf is
meant to get him some money to get back on track.
Chapter 2
The second chapter captures the birth of James in Cork, Ireland and the immigration of his
family. Primarily, it portrays the poverty that James’ father Sean O’Neill had to undergo and also
the immigration of the family to Philadelphia. The children also struggle with the death of their
mother in child birth to their youngest sister. The author follows Tommy as he works in the
garment family and goes on to get a job as an assistant in a pharmacy. This chapter captures the
boys as they grow into teenage and the struggles that the family faced as a result of poverty and
also for being immigrants.
Chapter 3
This chapter takes the reader further back to 1875 at the birth of a boy named Malcolm in St.
Louis. His father Cedric made instruments and was in a lovely marriage with his wife, Barbara.
