Thesis statement: The Republicans hired Callender to attack the Federalists hence his
accusations during Jefferson’s’ lifetime could only be disregarded. After Alexander Hamilton
confessed to engaging in affairs, Callender’s claims could not succeed in hurting Thomas
Jefferson’s’ status in politics. Annette Gordon-Reeds' work has fueled a controversy on the
Hemings and Jefferson relationship through the difference in her narrative and the teachings it
gives. The Sally Heming-Jefferson relationship should not be a factor to influence how we view
Jefferson as a leader and his position in U.S history.
