Social media has generated a wave of information than any single individual can
comfortably handle. This information has been the subject of much scrutiny and the influence it
has, has been controversial in certain circles. The wave of information is huge and has managed
to sweep numerous people in society off their feet and landed them in areas they may not have
expected. This can be both positive and negative. The social media industry has had a significant
impact both at a personal level and on a global scale. One industry that has been inevitably
affected and continued to be entangled in the social media information wave is the journalism
sector and the media industry as a whole.
From my perspective, one effect that social media has had on the journalism sector and
media industry is threatening its very existence (Wairimu, 2018). This is much like the way cell
phone threatened the existence of landline phones and how technology threatens jobs in some
industries. Previously, journalism was a highly envied position since the main outlet for news
and information to the public was the traditional news cycle, predominantly consumed through
television. However, now, the predominant mode of circulating news is social media (Belfrage &
BergStrom, 2018). In fact, as I was watching CBSN at one time, news anchor Vladimir recalled
when he first joined the network and was told that mainstream media would be out of fashion in
a few years by a friend.
Facebook accounts for a significant amount of internet traffic and a significant amount of
people say that they get their news from Facebook (Galica, Vannucci, Flannery, & Ohannessian,
