Computer architecture refers to the guidelines that explain computer work. The set of
rules also defines its organization and general performance. Computer design is the process of
formulating the hardware to provide a framework for the operation of the software. The process
of designing the hardware is the implementation stage once all the architectural guidelines are
put in place. System design/ computer design refers to the computer components which may not
be visible unless one physically opens the computer. The main reason for using computer
architecture and design is to ensure high performance, minimize the power usage and ensure the
reliability of its performance.
It is upon the designer to develop the various hardware and determine how they will fit
with other components so as to improve computer performance. Charles Baggage and Ada
Lovelace’s documentation of computer architecture in their description of the analytical engine
enhanced peoples understanding of computer architecture and design (Eric Kim & Alexandra
Toole, 2009). Computer architecture was first reported on a paper before being put in hardware
form. The subtype includes instruction set architecture (ISA) which gives the instruction that a
computer follows in order to operate smoothly. It also connects computer software and hardware.
Besides, it describes the terms such as types and registers that a computer uses to perform certain
tasks. Microarchitecture implements the instruction from ISA.
Computer architecture consists of 1/10 devices, memory, and processors. 1/10 devices
mainly transfer data inside to an outside its source without alteration. The processor acts as a
main part of the computer together with other components that majorly perform arithmetic
operations. The memory in a computer architecture mainly stores information for the future. It

also feeds the same information to the processor for a particular task (Matravers, 2011). The
memory assists in realizing computer codes so as to implement them. Once an instruction has
been developed, it has to be implemented. The hardware and software must be properly validated
for it to be able to execute all the demands by users.
The knowledge acquired from this class is very important to IT professionals because it
enables them to understand the composition of computers and how they work. This knowledge
