Phoenix, a large number of children have therefore been reported to being overweight and or
obese. There is, therefore, the need to educate parents on the dangers of childhood obesity and
the need for better nutrition and promotion of physical activity among children. The focus for
community teaching will, therefore, be parents in a local elementary school in Phoenix (Pate et
al., 2015).
Epidemiological Rationale for Topic:
A study by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control show that 14.5 % of all
children aged between 2- 4 years had obesity in the US. On the other hand, 15.8% of children
between 10- 17 years of age also suffered from obesity. In Arizona, the rate of obesity was
slightly lower than the national average with 13.3% of 2-4-year-old children having obesity with
14.5% of 10-17 years also suffering from the condition. Out of the 51 states, Arizona ranked 31
in childhood obesity prevalence (Pate et al., 2015).
