Health Information Technology Psychiatry
Psychiatry is a medical branch involving diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of issues of
mental disorders. In the research, the focus is on the importance of using HIT systems like
electronic health records in improving mental health. Electronic health records act as a data
source for health information on patients with mental problems. EHRs provides information
which, when shared by different health professionals, help determine the best therapy for a
particular mental disorder (Chambers, Haim, Mullican, & Stirratt, 2013). Mental health workers
improve the care provided to mentally disturbed patients after using electronic health records.
The workflow in a mental health center is enhanced when electronic health records provide the
needed safety to patients' information.
Therefore, I have chosen the topic on the use of HIT systems in psychiatry to help
explain their essence in improving mental health. The project will demystify the number of
people who lack access to mental healthcare and how modern innovations address the area of
concern. Thus, this project will explain the role of stakeholders in supporting the adoption and
implementation of Telehealth innovations in order to increase the quality of mental healthcare
(Wicklund, 2018). The project will also provide information on the benefits and cons of
Telehealth in mental healthcare as well as the impact of Telehealth in mental healthcare across
the continuum of care. The project will also provide the ethical aspects of the phenomenon that
has disrupted the way mental healthcare interventions are being handled.

health records are an example of a HIT system. Electronic health records allow a psychiatrist to
coordinate with other health professionals to treat patients with mental health. EHRs stores
information on patients in digital data to ensure patients' history is easily retrieved from a
hospital’s database for use in recommending better treatment concerning a common mental
condition (Plovnick, 2012). Without electronic health records, psychiatrists may be forced to rely
on inaccurate data stored manually concerning the health of a person with a mental health
condition. In the US, the federal government, through its Better Health Reconciliation Act,
supports the application of HIT systems in the field of psychiatry to ensure mental health
improves.
Electronic Health Records
Mental health problems over the years have been increasing in the US because many
people abuse drugs and drink excess alcohol. Lack of better ways to treat mental problems will
result in increased mental disorders in the US. Electronic health records are needed to ensure past
information of all people with a mental health condition on appointments, lab tests,
hospitalizations and medications are stored digitally for future reference and to provide the basis
on which conditions to receive therapies first in a mentally ill patient. Working in a mental health
field will be more comfortable, especially for the psychiatrists if electronic health records and
other types of health information technology are prioritized (Chambers, Haim, Mullican, &
Stirratt, 2013).
Creating Awareness
Information from EHRs will create awareness on new psychiatrists on how health
conditions related to high blood pressure and depression are common to patients with mental
disorders. Electronic health records depend on past healthcare delivery information to arrange
