Strong, healthy checks and balances are an absolute necessity in the existence of a democratic society. Overall, this system prevents any one of the three branches of the U.S. government to possess an unjust amount of power or authority. For example, although the legislative branch is responsible for passing laws, the judicial branch can declare any said law as unconstitutional, reversing the proposed legislation. On the other hand, the Senate can confirm the president's judicial branch nominations, and Congress can impeach judges and remove them from office.
