The Uprising of the Arab Spring
The Arab Spring is a movement involving a variety of Arabic armed rebellions and
protests against the government. The protests began in Tunisia in late 2010 after Mohammed
Bouazizi, a fruit vendor, committed suicide by setting himself ablaze in front of a government
building. He was disapproving the police actions to seize his stand as he had no business permit.
His death sparked protests in the region, and the resistance quickly spread throughout the Middle
East and North Africa to other countries such as Morocco, Bahrain, Egypt, Libya, and Syria.
Some of the notable groups in the uprising included the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt
and the al-Nahda in Tunisia. They all had three main objectives; to fight for democracy, advocate
for economic justice, and bring about adjustments in their tyrannical regimes which included
forcing the oppressive leaders out of power (Cammett, 2018). Religion plays a significant role in
