Activism, Change and Feminist Futures Rebecca Collier WGST 112 Slide 1 [No Audio] Slide 2 This chapter revisits the promises of feminist education. It discusses how feminist practices may improve the quality of women’s lives. It also addresses contemporary life in the US - activism and the way that individuals, groups and communities can work and affect change. It also explores issues associated with feminist activism. It addresses feminist vision, overviews and social trends that have implications for the future and explores what it might mean to live with feminist inspired integrity. We talk about feminist inspired integrity in this chapter. The definition of integrity has two parts. One is it’s a moral positioning about the distinction between right and wrong. The second is it’s a consistent stance on this morality such that we act out what we believe and attempt to live our ideals. There are seven aspects to this. Seven implications we might say. The first is it’s important to set feminist priorities and keep them. We need to recognize that some things are more important than others. Second, it’s important that we live in and envision a society that balances personal freedom and identity with public and collective responsibility. Third, we need to recognize that corporate capitalism does not function in everybody’s interest. In this sense, economic freedom must not be confused with economic democracy. Fourth, a present and future with a core value of feminist integrity is one that understands the limitations of, say, technology as well as the liberating aspects. A lot of corporations have invested heavily in new technologies and these don’t always work for the collective good. Fifth, a feminist integrity requires advocating for a sustainable physical environment. Central here is a need for environmental justice. We have poor communities and communities of color that continue to suffer disproportionately in terms of environmental degradation. Sixth, a peaceful and sustainable future is one that respects human dignity, celebrates differences and diversity yet recognizes that diversity does not necessarily imply equality. Seventh, and I really like this one, we have to believe that in all these efforts that it’s important to have a sense of humor and take time to play and celebrate. This social labor reformer, Emma Goldman, once said: If I can’t dance, it’s not my revolution. In this chapter and the articles, especially “Fear of Feminism” will help you answer these questions. We want to talk about some of these ways we can advocate, keep this feminist inspired integrity and try to make healthy change for all. Slide 3 An organization I would really like for you to be familiar with is the New Morning Foundation. It’s a nonpartisan, private sector, long term initiative to improve young people’s reproductive health education, counseling and clinical services throughout South Carolina. Of course, we’ve talked a lot about reproductive health. Their theory is when young people know all the facts they can make better decisions. When you give them access you empower them to act responsibly. These programs demonstrate how South Carolina can chart a better course for everyone if you have the right information. If you are in my classroom, I have someone who comes from an organization that is an arm of the New Morning Foundation called Tell Them. This particular person, one of a number of educators, would go around the state to try to have a unified voice and support age appropriate reproductive health education which, in South Carolina, three million dollars has been received in federal funds for abstinence-only-until-marriage programs. In 2008 it was 3 million dollars. The data shows that abstinence-only education does not work. Young people in South Carolina are sexually active. This group goes around and they present reproductive & contraception education. In South Carolina, we’re considered one of the top HIV hot spots. Three out of ten young women in South Carolina will become pregnant by the age of 20. Three out of ten. For six out of ten women, family planning clinics are their only source of health care. Young people ages 15 to 24 account for almost half of the new STD cases in South Carolina. So this group provides a great service. On top of that, they lobby before the legislature. There have been bills introduced that would threaten some of our reproductive rights that are already in place. They really serve a valuable purpose as advocates particularly for reproductive health. We’re going to have a presentation about the contraception that is available. You probably know a lot about the contraception that’s out there. Most of you do but a lot of you might not. We’re going to see this presentation and hopefully you’ll take a lot away from it.
