Writing

Description

You will be required to write 6 journals over the course of the semester. They can be any comic books, those you have read on your own time or additional selections from those on reserve at the library. The journals will be due when you turn in your final exam on the last day of class. They must be typed with 1” margins. Each must be one page in length, double-spaced.

Begin with a brief summary. BRIEF. Then, continue with lens analysis: using one of the lenses (or approaches) you are exposed to, analyze the text. For example, perhaps you read Batman: The Dark Knight and decide to use the psychological lens to analyze the work. You select a psychological theory (Erikson's stages of psychosocial development, for example) and you would determine which stage each of the characters seems to be at. (Interestingly enough, even though characters are three dimensional, they are often caught up in one of the conflicts Erikson discusses in his stages of psychosocial development. Batman, for example, might be caught up in stage 1: trust vs. mistrust. He's not an infant, but he still seems to be caught up in that conflict, as well as several others.

comic book should not include:

"The killing joke"

"sandman: preludes and nocturnes"

"V for Vendetta"

Summary of the Novel
In this work, a mariner appears on a park and starts his story. Cursed by an albatross,
he slew while at the same time hunting whales. He and his crew find themselves marooned
within a North Pacific that is characterized by Garbage Patch (Hayes, 2012). The north
Pacific is hypoxic and slow-whirling turbulence of plastic waste. The author wonders
whether this is a hidden repository for world litter. While still on his way, the mariner comes
across different characters of the present-day environmental tragedy, including a lady made
of oil, a 2-inch salp, a desolate ghost-ship penetrating barge, a hermit and a blue whale.
Besides, Nostradamus, Mephistopheles, Medusa, Thor and buzzard make cameo appearances
(Hayes, 2012). The novel is a visually striking debut. The novel is drawn with multifaceted,
iconic images that evocative of old woodcuts. Some of the things evident from this text
include compassion to Mother Nature, sense of association among the entire living things and
rightful outrage at man’s inconsiderate destruction of the environment (Hayes, 2012). The
work is both evocative and powerful, and it appeals to fans of both Habibi and Persepolis.
Ecocriticism of The Rime of the Modern Mariner
Ecocriticism analyzes literature that illustrates diverse environmental concerns.
Besides, it examines the different ways in which literature treats the subject of nature (Clark,
2015). Hayes illustrates the frightening environmental issues that people face in the 21st
century. He calls the world “detached from consequence.” This book is about environmental
degradation. Specifically, it shows how human activities have led to environmental
degradation. The evidence of environmental degradation caused by man is evident from the
shore where there is a leaking drilling barge that is leaking a “glossy thick petroleum slick,”
nylon netting in the albatross body, as well as swaths of polystyrene bibbing. It is clear that
all the above three elements polluting the sea are as a result of human activities. Therefore, in

this work, Nick Hayes is clearly condemning or criticizing human beings for their leading
role in environmental degradation. This text is a call to order for all human beings to ensure
that their activities do not lead to pollution of the environment, especially the seas.
