There are diverse clinical experiences which usually trouble nurses and they are expected
to utilize critical thinking in order to deal with this experiences appropriately. Personally, I was
faced with a clinical experience that really troubled me, whereby, an elderly patient who I was
providing care to wanted to walk all alone without any supervision. The patient appeared to be
weak and therefore it was obvious that he could not really walk with ease all alone. He insisted
that he could make it all alone without my supervision or assistance.
I was really bothered about this experience because there were high chances that if this
patient was allowed to walk alone, he might end up falling and hence leading to injuries on him.
Further, what bothered me was how to balance between the safety of the patient and
independence. This is because the patient had a right to decide what to do and therefore forcing
him not to do what he desired would be interfering with his independence to make decisions and
implement them. Therefore, due to the fact that he insisted on walking all alone I decided to let
him do so although I was very bothered that he may end up being injured.
