1. What role does fate play in the events of Romeo and Juliet? How are the young lovers victims of
misunderstandings, miscommunications, and plain bad luck? How do these elements influence the way
readers and audience members are affected by their story?
Answer:

Fate is a central theme in the play, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Fate also plays a
core role in the lives of the main characters, Romeo and Juliet. The lovers, Romeo and Juliet share a fate
that drives them to their tragic demise after sharing passionate affection. Even though the couples make
various efforts to dodge their fate, the lovebirds still fall victims of the inescapable shadow of fate. Fate
plays a role in various key effects in the lives of the lovers including their passionate affection for one
another that brings them together. Also, it is fate that painfully separates the lovers in a bitter ending but
at the same time, fosters harmony in Verona. The play’s Prologue opens the subject matter of fate when
Romeo and Juliet are referred to as “star-crossed” and “death-marked.” The Prologue alludes to the idea
that fate is against the two lovers and they are powerless over their life events and predicts their trading
and painful ending.
Both Romeo and Juliet are joined together in love by the power of fate. Romeo and Juliet are
from feuding families and it is totally unrealistic for a Montague to even think of establishing a
