INFORMATION SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE OVERVIEW

Abstract

Internet was an invention of a group of programmers who regularly made developments that
later was unified and called the Internet. Attributing the development of the internet to one person is
nearly impossible. The first name of the Internet was an Information Super Highway. Before the
internet was invented, there was already an anticipation of the existence of a form of a worldwide
network of information. Tesla developed the idea of the Internet in the early 1990s. After this, there
are thinkers like Vannevar Bush, who came with the idea of having storage for media and books
before the end of World War II. The first application of Internet was realized in the 1960s when
Licklider invented Intergalactic Network. Shortly after the discovery, the scientists developed further
the concept of packet switching that would later become a significant building block of the internet.

Intranet, on the other hand, means computer connections within a company. For external use,
the information is not available. An intranet is, therefore, a private network for an organization that
is based on technologies such as TCP/IP. As mentioned earlier, the Intranet is accessible only within
an organization and business associates such as customers, suppliers, and not a member of the public.
Intranet can be configured to provide information such as email, data storage, and search. It may also
contain policies manuals and internal directories for pricing and product information or suppliers.
Another example of an intranet is an accounting system.

How data is stored in the network

When it comes to data storage, no solution fits all scenario. The best storage method is
databases, while other organizations use file formats. Data can be stored in a structured or
unstructured form, and that depends on the type of data and the motive behind storing the data.
Having the background of the amount of data and the institution can decide to go cloud, have local
storage, or have a mix of the two. There are many online database solutions, such as MS Azure,

Amazon AWS, and Oracle's Autonomous Data Warehouse. Locally, there are solutions such as
MySQL, and cloud solutions make the best. One example is the Fibre Channel SAN that may be great
in doing high latency read/write on a structured database. The storage solution is mainly optimum
while storing video workloads. There are also cloud solutions that provide flexibility

Cloud Computing

Cloud computing is the delivery of services such as database, storage, software, intelligence,
analytics, and servers over the internet. Cloud computing offers faster, flexible resources and
innovation to an organization. When a company invests in cloud computing, they lower costs and run
infrastructure more efficiently (Corson, Macker & Cirincione, 2012). Services provided over the
internet offers a low-cost model and eliminates the capital expense of having the physical
infrastructure for running the data centers. The company saves on the costs of setting up the servers,
cooling, and the costs of paying the information technology personnel for managing the information
technology infrastructure. Cloud-based environments also offer faster data access. The services ondemand basis; hence, it provides capacity planning and takes the burden from the company. The
platform also has performance and security guarantee. Cloud computing services run on a worldwide
network that is regularly upgraded to the latest Information technology infrastructure and hardware.
The result is reduced network latency and greater economies o...
