Iron and Steel
Iron is an element that is extracted from iron ore (Fe2O3). Pig Iron is realized by reducing iron
ore to pig iron in a furnace. Fe2O3 + 2CO ---→ 2Fe + 3CO2. This is an impure iron and cannot be
used directly in civil engineering. It is therefore remelted in the presence of Coke and Limestone.
After this, the end product is cast iron in various types such as grey molted iron, chilled cast iron
