Punishment has been administered in several forms over the years and has changed with time. Society today justifies punishment for five main reasons (retribution, deterrence, rehabilitation, incapacitation, and reintegration).
Which justification you identify with most closely and why. What other policies or suggestions do you have to reduce crime?
Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!
The society today justifies punishment for many reasons, but the reason that I am more familiar with is rehabilitation. Unlawful citizens are convicted to reform them. They are taught different skills as they serve their term, which in turn transforms them into good citizens. If crime is to be reduced, the government should create more jobs as it is evident that most people engage in criminal activities due to lack of jobs. Making our correctional facilities undesirable by ensuring that convicts do not see their loved ones more often will also put crime at its lowest.
