Professor: SMART Goals
Why are SMART goals an important part of the treatment process?
My response:
It is important to ensure that treatment goals are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and
timely. Such goals are often set up for success as opposed to vague goals that lack direction.
Smart goals help the client to push further bearing in mind that the set goals are achievable. The
fact that the goals are not beyond their capability motivates them to work harder towards
achieving them. Lack of realistic goals can cause an individual to get stuck along the treatment
journey. Ensuring that the set goals are realistic is an effective of keeping the client on track.
Goals that are specific give the client something to work on at a time. This helps to eliminate the
vagueness that is often associated with treatment goals (Bovend'Eerdt, Botell, & Wade, 2009).
This keeps the client motivated and encouraged to tackle one specific goal at a time.
Understanding that the goal is timely helps to clear the likelihood of having the client get stuck
along the way. This is because; a timely goal creates the necessity to the client to achieve the
goal in the stipulated period of time.

DQ#2: What tools can you use to help motivate the client and keep them on track with their
stated goals? What types of interventions might be appropriate to help the client become more
focused or motivated? What are the indicators the client is stuck?
The first and most important tool is the treatment plan. Stated, mutually agreed upon goals and
objectives should help the client stay on track. After all, if it is their goal, to begin with, wouldn’t
they want to make their best effort to achieve that goal? If not, perhaps the goal needs to be
modified or simplified. It is also important to recognize that losing focus or being ‘stuck’ can be
a sign of resistance which is important to understand. Is it issue related resistance or relational
resistance? Resistance can be a conscious...
