Introduction
The 1950s saw the emergence of the humanistic theories, including the person-centered
theory developed by Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow's theory of self-actualization. The two
theories, as developed by two different theorists, are based on different approaches to explaining
the concept of self-actualization ("Humanistic Theories of Personality - Psychology", 2018). In
this paper, an analysis of the two humanistic theories will be presented.
Comparison of Person-Centered Theory with Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
The person-centered theory viewed self-actualizations in terms of the fully functioning
person. The theory suggests that for an individual to become self-actualized, their natural instinct
must be fully functioning. According to this theory, self-actualization is defined as a tendency en
route to growth, which is needed to enhance and maintain a life which is a human characteristic.
The main goal of human existence is viewed as satisfying this need. Maintaining and enhancing
oneself is supposed to be both psychologically and physically. The physical aspect is viewed in
