There are several reasons as to why a person may work. There are different driving forces
towards working. The effect of these forces may vary depending on the needs of the worker.
Chapter 11 of Stephen Robbins's book discusses these theories well. Various motivational theories
keep a worker operational in his career. They include; the Maslow's hierarchy of needs,
McGregory’s Theory of X and Y's, Herzberg's two-factor theory, Goal setting theory and lastly
McClelland's Three-Needs Theory (Ramlall, 2014).
According to his book, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs explains that a person may be
motivated to work because of the need to attain several necessities in the hierarchy of importance.
