The Social Work Assessment Tool (SWAT) will be used in analyzing the case. The tool has
11 issues which will be assessed.
1. End-of-life decisions consistent with their religious and cultural norms
Both Karen and the caregiver have been afraid of the ending of life. Karen is afraid of the
many chemotherapies which have been done but she does not get well. Her mother has been
going to see her every day. They are a religious family with Christian values. Both have a rate of
4 since they don't have cultural norms.
2. Patient thoughts of suicide or wanting to hasten death
In the case study, Karen did not have any thoughts of committing suicide. She had a bright
sense of humor and she hoped on recovering. Therefore the rating is 1. The caregiver also did not
have thoughts of suicide or wanting to hasten death. Karen’s mother and Sarah have been
supportive and that’s why they are in shock when the doctors told them that nothing else they
could offer to them. The rating for Karen will be 1 as well as the caregiver since they have not

3. Anxiety about death
Karen is having anxiety about death since she has been experiencing difficult times while on
chemotherapy. Karen has also been having painful side effects and she felt devastated when the
doctors told her that nothing else they could offer to her. Due to this anxiety, the rating of Karen
