hello

perimeter = 2( length + width)

     42      = 2 (x+4 +2x-7)

      42     = 2( 3x -3 )

     42/2  =  3x-3

      21   = 3x-3

      21+3= 3x

        24 = 3x

         x = 24/3

         x= 8..

length = x+4 = 8+4 = 12................................answer

width = 2x-7 = 2*8 - 7 =9..............................answer

answer is

J.length= 12  and width = 9

hope you understood..please message if you have any doubts...thank you

why did you divide by 2 instead of distributing the 2 to the 3x-3

Jan 6th, 2016

you can do that also ,

answer will be same

i will show you

 42     = 2( 3x -3 )

42 = 2*3x - 2*3

 42 = 6x - 6

42+6 =6x

  48 = 6x

   x = 48/6

   x = 8

this is the same answer i got before , x=8
