Summary
The play opens with a farmhouse abandoned with many things undone. Five people get to
this farmhouse for investigation of a crime on the murder of John Wright. The five people are
George Henderson, a county attorney, Henry Peters, a sheriff, and Lewis Hales, Mrs. Peters and
Mrs. Hales. The play starts with Mr. Hales explaining his experience of realizing the death of
John Wright the previous day. According to Mr. Hale, he was passing by his neighbors inquiring
if they could be interested in a party-line telephone when Minnie, Mrs. Wright told him that her
husband was dead. Minnie stated that she did not wake up when her husband was killed. Mrs.
Write was arrested and detained in connection with the murder of her husband.
In the investigation, the Sheriff and Attorney realize that there is a problem since the rope
used belonged to the family. The two found it strange when Mrs. Wright stated that she did not
notice when the murder took place yet they were living in the same room. Men went upstairs for
further investigation when women stayed in the kitchen where they noticed a broken cage with a
dead bird. By the time men finished their investigation upstairs, women had also finished
gathering items as per Mrs. Wright’s request (Glaspell, 2014).
The county attorney opts to tarry for further investigation. In the process, Mrs. Peters
takes the dead bird with her secretly as a way of eliminating the evidence. At this point, all men
in the investigation believed with no reasonable doubts that Mrs. Wright committed the crime.
Similarly, women believe that Mrs. Wright murdered her husband.
Sheriff behaved as if he never cared about the entire case by giving the County Attorney
unreliable information by saying that the kitchen had nothing but the ordinary kitchen things.
This hindered the ability of the Sheriff and County Attorney to gather reliable evidence to
