My Leadership Development Plan
Good planning forms a fundamental requisite of every action, and this includes
leadership development. Every successful leader starts by formulating a specific plan and later
takes a necessary course of action to make it a reality. I knew that I would never implement my
plan without drawing down a structure and finding an effective way to implement it. As the
university president aspirant, this plan will help me to identify and develop my leadership skills
into an effective and trusted president. The plan will also highlight my goals and, therefore,
giving a sense of direction towards my leadership. In this context, this article seeks to develop a
leadership plan for my aspirant position of the university president.
My Main Development Goal
My main development goal is to become a competent and respectful president of my
current university after the next general election.
Self-Understanding
We are living in an era that enjoys economic development, and good leadership is at the
heart of it. It is necessary for all leaders and aspirants to assess their strengths and weaknesses.
As a leader and an aspirant president, this assessment will determine the possibility of my victory
and the service skills I will implement towards achieving my targets (Ahlquist, 2017). In this
case, I will assess my self-understanding using SWOT analysis, which includes my personal
strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and weaknesses.
Just as general managers have to discover the worth of their firm and explain it to the
outside population, all potential leaders also need to do a self-assessment and pinpoint their
strengths and explain how they intend to explore them for the benefit of their subjects. As a
presidential school aspirant, identifying my strengths will align me to my future path and help

me discover my positive leadership qualities that will serve as a driving force towards my
success. My strengths include integrity, accountability, trust, and hard work. These are attributes
I have demonstrated on several occasions, especially in my previous positions before vying for
the university president. For instance, during my time as an Organizing Secretary at the
university, the above qualities formed a foundation for my successful leadership. I also have
good communication skills that always allow me to serve as an intermediate between the
school’s management staff and the student. I can listen and at the same time, speak out when
necessary.
It is essential to look at my potential weaknesses as a true leader. Discovery of my
weaknesses will serve as a course of improvement in my leadership skills. It will help me focus
on personal growth and if possible, select a suitable team to serve with. Leaders are human
beings and, therefore, may not possess all the good qualities. The team selected should entail
people with a similar vision and be able to provide support, especially in your areas of weakness.
My greatest weakness is reliability. As a democratic leader, I most often depend on other people
to give their input for my complete satisfaction in every task I do. However, this has served as a
stepping stone towards higher achievement as it helped me select a team of potential youths to
advise me in different aspects of my leadership. As a result, this does not only involve my
subjects in decision-making but also gives them a chance to practice their leadership skills.
While a leader’s strengths and weaknesses are internal forces, opportunities or growth
areas are from external forces. It takes an external inoculation of new energy to fuse your
attributes and produce the best impact on your leadership. As the current presidential aspirant in
my university, I am focused on working hard in my studies to become a better student. This will
help me establish a collaborative relationship with my teachers and earn trust from my fellow

Every strong leader must experience threats, and these stem from external environments.
