Organized crimes’ threats to the supply chain still exist after 9/11, but the more stringent customs regulations implemented after 9/11 have made it more difficult for organized criminal organizations to transport goods across borders (M2 Presswire, 2006). Transport Intelligence Survey claims post 9/11 supply chains have also become more efficient as a result of businesses implementing technology to meet these more stringent customs regulations. Urciuoli (2013) stated that despite the beneficial effects information technology and increased efficiency in supply chains, the information technology has opened supply chains up now more than ever to cyber security attacks where organized criminal networks or terrorists hack into systems in order to disrupt the economy or communities. I do not believe that the world will ever completely eliminate organized crimes’ threats as criminal organizations will evolve with changes in technology or operations and will find ways continue their illegal operations. The increase in cyber-attacks on the cyber security systems that control and monitor the movement of cargo in global supply chains is a perfect example of this. The key is to keep pace and try to stay one step ahead of the criminal organizations in order to limit the disruptions. Ritter (2007) described five strategic pillars of total security management provides a solid framework for this. Pillar III and pillar IV which states that total security implies continual improvement and total security helps firms avoid, minimize, or survive disruptive events are good principles required for organizations to stay one step ahead of the organized criminal networks (Ritter, 2007).
