Okupe Memorandum Adeyemi Okupe University of Maryland University College UCSP 615 June 16, 2019 Okupe Penske Truck Rental Memorandum To: Phillip Wagner From: Adeyemi Okupe CC: All Staff In the year 2019, there has been a strong push for major advancements in the truck rental business as demands for the business has peaked within the past 5 years consistently. In looking at the growth for the business it simply means more trucks on the roads, but there are 3 main trends that are arising According to truckinginfo.com “The driver shortage continues to be the No. 1 challenge”. One of the most important factors to growth in the transportation industry is having the availability of drivers. Now, in the past 3 years of researching this field, by articles and also in person interviews there has been a huge scarcity in drivers within the field. This is in part due to laws passed by MDOT. According to multiple drivers the laws are too harsh. I spoke to one driver who drives for GIANT who stated that “now I have a camera in my cab, if I hit my brakes too hard then I get written up because it sends a notification to my boss.” With driver complaints Okupe about driving conditions, pay, laws being passed more strictly, all of these have caused a shortage in drivers and overall scarcity. To combat this in our company, I suggest we have a pay that’s above market value and also offer all drivers full benefits. The use of technology has been an increase in the trend of this industry. Using technology to track fleet management. Using technology to diagnose truck issues. And even before mechanical breakdowns happening with new technology trucks are able to self-diagnose before the actual vehicle shuts down. There has also been the implementation of the driver app that allows the driver to connect to the cab while in the trucks. This app gives the driver updates on the truck, fuel economy, all locations to refuel, shops that are open 24/7 and much more. Lastly, Tesla has been one of the leading innovators in the autonomous driving ring. They have proven without a shadow of doubt that they lead the industry in getting vehicles on the road that drive themselves. In this same respect, there have been multiple talks about autonomous driving tractors. An 18-wheeler driving itself down the highway. According to truckinginfo.com, ““Selfdriving trucks” have really caught the imagination of the mainstream and tech media since the Freightliner Inspiration concept truck drove itself across the Hoover Dam in 2015.” There is a huge shift in the industry, an upward shift and with these trends our company will be able to move up to the next level and continue to be the leading truck rental company in the world. TRUCK DRIVER SHORTAGE

2

One of the biggest challenge facing the transportation industry is the massive shortage of
truck drivers resulting from problems with truck drivers’ retention. According to the American
Trucking Association, nearly seventy-five percent of the goods that America depends on are
transported via trucks, but the industry requires about nine hundred thousand more drivers to
keep with the rising demands (Staats et al., 2017). Again, according to the American Trucking
Associations, big companies such as Amazon and Walmart need over fifty-two thousand drivers
to ship their goods across the country effectively (Hege et al., 2019). Generally, truckers drive
the American economy, and an issue with the truckers profoundly affects the economy. The
massive shortage in truck drivers is already pushing to delays in shipment of essential products
and causing an increased price in goods that are sold to Americans. According to DAT analysis
on the industry, only one truck was available for twelve loads that were to be moved from the
beginning of 2019, which is a low ratio that has lasted since 2015 (Burks & Monaco, 2019).
Similarly, the sheer lack of trained drivers amplifying the effect of shortage on truck drivers. The
fluctuation in the numbers of drivers poses a serious concern to the transportation industry, for
the supply chain and the overall economy.
The industry is so desperate for drivers to the extent that transportation companies have
been forced to increase pay and benefits to retain and acquire drivers. The biggest issue is
finding the root cause of why drivers walk out of this job and why many individuals do not want
to be associated with trucking and finding solutions as a company. The American Trucking
Association carried out research and found significant problems that face drivers, forcing them to
opt out (Burks & Monaco, 2019). First, the drivers reported that th...
