I watched one of the Alice Paul documentaries (the first one among three), and what I learned about her is that she was a suffragist who fought for women's voting rights and gender equality, and went on hunger strikes in jail like Emmeline Pankhurst (who was introduced in Read&Riot). Given that her parents supported gender equality, believed in education, and brought her to suffragist meetings, it is obvious that she grew up a feminist and an activist; and also the beliefs and values set in early life drive one's life, so education is important. I appreciate her works as an early feminist who was a pivotal figure who inspired many women and men to believe in gender equality. And I think Lesley did a great job of capturing Alice Paul's determination and hard work in this video, by providing many pictures and through her clear and concise narration. And also mentioning of API at the end gives us how Alice Paul and her work still has an impact in today's society and is remembered. Another one I watched is Ida B. Wells (the last one). Ida B. Wells's story made me so upset because her friend Thomas Moss was lynched for defending an injustice against black people and I'm assuming he is killed just because of his skin color. That incident may have motivated Ida B. Wells to fight against and take action, which ultimately made an impact in the late 1800s U.S. society, but it also is evidence of atrocious racism that obligated black people to be politicized--since the oppressed cannot afford the luxury of being depoliticized, it's a matter of survival. I loved the way this filmmaker began the documentary by introducing Wells as a symbol of hope when hope was scarce. This goes along with Nadya's closing statement "Hope Comes from the Hopeless," Ida B. Wells made hope out of the devastating reality that discredited hers and black people's lives. Thank you to both filmmakers for making your documentaries about two awesome feminist heroes!
