Crime has and continues to be an essential social and economic issue in the United
States. The aspect of crime raises questions on how the country's criminal justice system
should be handling crime. Over the past few decades, the United States has witnessed an
increase in incarceration rates because of the increased harsher sentencing policies. The
criminal justice system has a variety of goals regarding handling a crime, including
incapacitation, deterrence, punishment, and rehabilitation. However, in recent decades, the
United States has focused more on deterring crime as witnessed by most of their policy
