Statistics of Postpartum Depression
Abstract
Postpartum depression (PPD) can be described as the form of depression suffered by
mothers following childbirth, often resulting from a combination of fatigue, psychological
adjustment to motherhood, as well as hormonal changes. It can also be said to be a complex mix
of behavioral, emotional, as well as physical changes occurring after childbirth as a result of
psychological, social, and chemical changes related to having a baby. The condition affects up to
15% of women with varying symptoms and duration. However, it is often unreported and
undocumented, and it impacts negatively on child and maternal health (Stewart & Vigod, 2016).
In this paper, we are going to describe the economic issues involved, the economic theories that
explain, the statistical facts, as well as the statistical processes used to study postpartum
depression.
Economic Issues Involved with Postpartum Depression
Considering that the average age of new mothers presently is about twenty-six years,
which falls directly in the middle of the span of the millennial generation, any economic
repercussions of PPD are likely to affect at a specifically vulnerable time in a life of a young
woman. The affected mothers will not only be struggling with the condition as well as the birth
of a child, but they will also be struggling to spearhead their careers with little savings
accumulated. Considering the significant roles mothers play, as well as their contribution in the
present day workforce, these declines in employment as well as income, could affect the
economy of the country for years to come (Stewart & Vigod, 2016).
