• In the medical practice the practice of intentionally relieving pain and suffering by ending life is
euthanasia.

• Though the practice is not legal in most countries, some have incorporated it into its medical
practice.
• In Belgium and Netherlands euthanasia is defined as ‘ending of life by a doctor at a patient’s
request’. The Dutch define euthanasia as termination of life on request and assisted suicide.

• The various definitions of euthanasia among different countries form an ethical issue in the
circumstance in which a patient can chose euthanasia as an alternative to suffering.
• This paper discusses the circumstances in which euthanasia can be termed as legal and can be
practiced at a patient’s request.

• The Netherlands define euthanasia as ‘ending of life by a doctor at a patient’s request.
• The circumstances under which patient’s requests can be taken into consideration are a
cause of ethical concern as suffering can range from physical, emotional and
psychological.
• Noa Pothoven was legally euthanized in 2019 following a long fight with anorexia,
depression and other mental illness.
• She sought euthanasia at a local clinic behind the back of her parents but was refused.
