Qn. 1: Describe the link between quality and safety in the healthcare setting.

During the critical times in healthcare settings, compilations and accidents were
deadly. Instances such as human errors, technical failures, and system mishaps during the
medical process caused adverse medical events, injuries or even death to patients. Until the
1990s when errors began to attract attention. Efforts to reduce and prevent unsatisfactory
work environments were developed. In response, various studies express a positive
relationship between patient outcomes and factors such as nursing workload, patient physical
ratio factor, improvement of mortality rates, and job performance among other factors. This
paper outlines the dimensional relationship between patient safety and quality of care with a
close emphasis on Kathleen Master’s analysis Quality Improvement and Professional Nursing
Practice.
Masters opens up by citing Institute Of Medicine definition of quality (2001).
Healthcare quality is the degree to which the desired healthcare outcomes are attained with
the consistency of the current health profession knowledge. Quality should be continuously
improved by monitoring care processes and design methods in a continuous process. On the
other hand, the patient seems like the concrete side of healthcare quality. This refers to the
philosophy of preventing harm to patients by emphasizing on quality delivery. Patient safety
arises from a bunch of effective practices aimed at preventing errors build around the safety
culture.
Safety and quality are two important fundamental factors of care delivery that bring
about change and transition through strong political commitment and institutional
capabilities. In a bold way, creating a safety culture in a healthcare facility requires human
professionals to design effective processes that appreciate human weaknesses and strengths in
care delivery. To deal with the alarm of quality care and safety in the healthcare setting,

healthcare institutions should be recognized as organizations to create a robust strategy to
control the risk of harm (Sherwood & Barnsteiner, (Eds.) 2017). Embracing healthcare
facilities as organisations must observe aspects of TQM (total quality management). This is
the reason why ISO 9000 certification and emphasis of customer satisfaction in
organizational performance exists as a separate topic. ISO 9000 enhances standardization of
procedures and processes to create a common language of delivery throughout the entire
healthcare organization. Masters provides a standard example of CAHPS Hospital Survey
where nurses ask a core set of questions related to care experiences (Masters Pg. 389).
QMS (quality management systems) focus on systems to enhance organizational
excellence rather than individual errors. At this point, healthcare organizations seem to settle
on the issue of quality and patient safety. QMS create a continual flow of activities and
procedures that power patient safety initiatives. This includes focussing on safety leadership
programs, safety training and communication processes (Masters Pg. 393). QMS focusses on
effectives of...
