Keystone National High School

Description

You just finished seeing a movie with a group of friends, and you are all standing in the lobby talking about the film. Some people in the group insist the film was a horror flick, and a bad one at that. Others argue that it was a thriller, and a great one, with lots of heart-pounding suspense. These people are judging the film based on the criteria of the genre they each believe the film fits into.

In this course you have analyzed literature using the criteria of several different schools of criticism or analysis including: Historical, Aesthetic, Cultural, Reader Response, and Jungian. The chart below gives a review by outlining the definition and characteristics of each of these types of criticism (SEE ATTACHMENT FOR TYPES OF CRITICISM). In this writing assignment, you are going to analyze a single story through the lens of two different types of analysis. (SEE ATTACHED STORY)

Write a one-paragraph (minimum 12 sentences) analysis of the story for each of the two types of criticism you selected. For each paragraph, include:

  • A hook.
  • A brief summary.
  • An arguable thesis related to the type of criticism and the theme of the story.
  • At least 2 embedded/direct quotations from the text that support your thesis with a lead in and commentary for each.
  • A thesis echo.
  • A clincher.

4.Revise and edit your paragraphs for logic, unity, and completeness.

ANALYZING A SHORT STORY

2
Historical Context of A&P

Published in 1961, A&P is a version of the mythology that defined 1960 in which
youthful rebels began taking on the soulless system. This story contains various elements of this
myth, including the environment of the post-war growth and the attendant culture of consumer, a
clue about the cold war where Sammy imagines Russia having control of A&P in1990. Other
symbols of the myth in the story include the indispensable rebound of the youth through the
clash amongst Sammy, the girls, and Langel. The significant indicator of the tremendous social
mayhems of 1960 is evident in the story focus on the poor dressing style of these girls. The
ultimate symbol of the conflict among different generations in the 1960s is the difference
between log haired, hippies, and parents in suits and dresses. The dressing style of the girls
moving around A&P showing their bathing suits is just one of the many controversies that
dominated the subsequent decades. In the story, Sammy is seemingly on the side of those who
have accepted the new trend. However, what he desires is described by his dislikes. Sammy does
not want to get buttoned up like Langel and also does not like the kind of life his parents had. His
desires are presented in the girls. This kind of conflict would become an emblem of 1960 and the
years that followed. An ultimate result is an act of defiance by Sammy, which is just an allegory
of young people of these times struggling to redefine themselves.
