Introduction
Fetal development depends on the nutrients acquired from the expectant mother's
bloodstream. During the gestation period, nutrients, biochemical products, and fluids are
directly passed from the mother's blood to the unborn child's entire body parts through the
amniotic fluid (Mick, Biederman, Faraone, Sayer, & Kleinman, 2002). Thus, the healthy
development of a child while in the womb is dependent on the health of the mother. Drug use
during pregnancy exposes the child to congenital disabilities. Exposure to congenital
disabilities occurs because drugs contain poisonous substances harmful to the development of
the unborn child. Chemical substances, such as nicotine, carbon monoxide, alcohol contents
are detrimental to the child's brain and body development (Mick et al., 2002). Thus, expectant
mothers are advised against drug use.
The Effect of Tobacco Smoking on the Unborn
Tobacco smoking during pregnancy has long term effects on the unborn baby during
