Mark Twain is satirizing the advice that is generally given to young people. He takes
the average advice that one would expect to be given to children – for instance, “listen
to your parents” – but subverts it for a comedic and satiric twist. In line with that same
example, Twain tells the audience: “Always obey your parents, when they are
present”.
2. What techniques does Twain use to create his satire?
Twain relies on various techniques to create his satire, from hyperbole to reversal.
Twain drastically exaggerates some of the events that he describes, like the anecdote
about the man with the gun who threatened his grandmother. Reversal, or the
subversion of an expected ending, can also be found in that tale, as well as in the
endings to the other lines of advice that he gives the audience. For instance, “Now as
to the matter of lying. You want to be very careful about lying; otherwise you are
nearly sure to get caught” (Twain). Irony is also found in the text, as well.
