How Strategic Thinking, Decision making, and Innovation helped Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in
India General Election 2019

Strategic thinking, decision making, and innovation helped Bharatiya Janata Party to win
the election in 2019. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had led the government for a 5-year term
within which a strategic approach had been built for this success. According to the New York
Times (2019, May 22), many analysts had predicted BJP losing seat overall due to the
dissatisfaction with the economy. The use of a strategy based campaign was the primary factor
that led to significant success. BJP established some strategic goals and worked on the same.
Strategic thinking worked well among the 900 million voters, and the election success was
significant. The two strategic goals were built on cultural nationalism Hindutva and national
security, the initiative that BJP adopted (Ahmed, 2019). The strategic thinking approach in the
campaign involved creating a future for the country with which citizens can quickly identify. BJP's
strong pillars were built on all nationalists whose initiatives included having a parliament that
will prioritize the interests and the rights of the people. The purpose of the research proposal is to
assess how strategic thinking, decision making, and innovation initiative gave BJP political
success to make a recommendation for such interventions in the business environment.

Strategic thinking, decision-making, and innovation have been believed to be the key
drivers for the competitiveness of many business organizations. However, recent political events
in India, especially with regards to Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) ascension to power in 2014 and
subsequent reelection in 2019 demonstrated clearly that these aspects also apply perfectly in
political competition. Concerning strategic thinking, an entity is expected to make sure that it
creates a plan with which it will use to achieve its goals. In business, just as it is in politics, there
are interests and goals which the stakeholders would want to achieve.

Strategic thinking means the leaders must think towards the determination of the most
suitable approaches and practices which would help them to achieve such goals and objectives.
On the other side, decision making means taking a stand concerning activity or strategic
direction which an organization would like to pursue. In many cases, institutions fail to achieve
their goals and mission when they fail to delay to make decisions. In this regard, decisionmaking is such an important process which contributes significantly to the success of
organizations. However, since the environments in which organizations operate to keep changing
regularly, strategic thinking and decision-making are not sufficient to lead to organizational

Innovation is required for organizations to successfully encounter threats and challenges
which are continually changing in nature. The election of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) into
power in 2014 was highly unexpected. In the previous years, the party had made some critical
misstates which prevented it from capturing the power and many political strategists, and local
observers wrote off the chances of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) winning the elections. The win of

Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2014 brought into focus the contribution of strategic thinking,
planning, and innovation in the political power play. Had it not been for the massive changes in
approach to elections by the party, perhaps it would have been incredibly difficult for Bhartiya
Janata Party (BJP) to win the elections.

Before its return to the leadership of the house in 2014, Bharatiya Janata Party had
experienced some resounding defeats in previous elections, most prominently in 2004 when it
lost the leadership of parliament to Congress Party’s United Progressive Alliance (UPA)
coalition. The dwindling fortunes of this party also came to fore in 2009 when it lost the
parliamentary leadership to Congress Party’s United Progressive Alliance (UPA) coalition again.
It is important to note that the turn of events for this party which had endeared itself massively to
the electorate in the early 1990s was a cause of panic not only to its leaders but also to its
supporters. Both the leaders and the supporters were under no illusion about the possibility of the
party going down the road of extinction in the near future. The image below presents the picture
of the party’s performance in Utah Pradesh Lok Sabha elections before 2014. Utah Pradesh is the
largest state in India, and it has over 200 million inhabitants. Its primary purpose is to
demonstrate the massive improvements which the party made in the 2014 elections.

From the figure above, although it carries only the Lok Sabha results of Utah Pradesh, it
is not lost on a keen observer that the figures indicate a massive improvement in the performance
of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). In 2004, and 2009 elections, the party performed dismally, only
managing 10 seats in Lok Sabha. That was barely 10% of the total seats. That was a dismal
performance, looking at it in any standard. However, come 2014, out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats
in Utah Pradesh, the party managed to win 71 seats. That translates to over 90%. Looking at the
figures, it is notable that the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) registered one of the greatest
improvements in its history. What could have the party done right in this election? And what
could it have been doing wrong in the previous elections? These are some of the critical
questions which this paper seeks to answer with attention to the possible contribution of strategic
thinking, decision-making, and innovation.

Creating a clear strategic vision helped the party to pull support from citizens as the
campaign centered on having an all-inclusive and equal government. According to Masih & Slater
(2019, May 23), BJP’s vision is to create a government that will prioritize its citizens no matter

their background or status; a strategic approach that the majority of voters supported. Despite the
unfulfilled economic objectives after winning in the last election, Modi, the Prime Minister
redefined the strategic initiatives and identified with the message of nationalist pride. Following a
terrorist attack in Kashmir in February, the strategic innovation of achieving national security was
a popular initiative. A strategic thinking initiative also works to sway individuals from particular
difficulties to reconsider future alternative efforts. With the economic hardships at the election
period, the reelection of Modi and BJP success was not imminent, thus the need for strategy.
The 2019 elections can be considered as a referendum for BJP nationalism politics.
According to BBC News (2019, May 23), Modi asserted that there is a universal consideration for
a new India (Ahmed, 2009). One element of strategic thinking that BJP used is performing an
assessment and projecting the problem. The party identified that national security is a primary
concern following the terror attack hence assuring citizens of enhancing national security, which
led to increased support. Strategic thinking initiatives need to recognize the existing problems and
forecast a desirable future. The emphasis on the need to conserve the culture and the national
heritage promoted the implication of Modi commitment to the Indian citizens. Strategic innovation
requires creativity in addressing the non-obvious issues. BJP used strategic planning, such as the
demonetization plan and the GST reforms to reduce black money transactions. In strategic
planning, there is a need to identify resources available to meet the desired goals, which brought
the success of BJP as they fought for constitutional rights.
Therefore, strategic thinking, decision making, and Innovation are the most influential
factors in effective decision making. This is what BJP possessed, and it masterminded Modi's
success. These three strategic components are the primary factor of any given success, even in an
