Movie Title: THE DHAMMA BROTHERS
Vipassana Meditation Impact on Inmates
“The Dhamma Brothers” is a documentary directed by Jenny Philips with its focus on the
effects of Vipassana meditation on inmates at Donaldson Correctional Facility located in
Alabama. This was the first correctional facility to introduce this meditation technique in
America, which has its roots from Buddhism. The documentary features interviews from inmates
practicing Vipassana on their confession of the mistake they carried in the past, effects
experienced after and during meditation, and interviews on wardens on the behavior change of
the inmates. Vipassana meditation is carried out ten days for ten hours every day where inmates
are not allowed to talk, watch TV or have visitors but meditate, eat, and sleep (Lynn, 2018). On
the first three days of meditation, Dhamma brothers focused on their breath so that they will be
able to master the mind. The remaining six days involved noticing all body sensation and avoid
reacting to them. The last day was dedicated to learn goodwill and practice it. The meditation
increased the emotional intelligence of the inmates, reduced anger, improved their psychological
wellbeing, and reduced distress and anger (Lynn, 2018). The meditation program faced strong
rejection from religious leaders arguing that the practice was against Christianity values and
norms.
