Assignment 2: Partnership with Families
• The following four specific areas are of great interest for this assignment in helping to
build a partnership with families:
• Interventionists take time to get to know the family
• Family Strengths are identified and emphasized
• Families are actively included in planning and decision-making
• Services and supports are developed for the whole family
Interventionists take time to get to know the
family
• Interventionists refer to qualified mental health professionals/experts who chose to specialize in helping
individuals to find treatment for addiction in a member(s) of the family and treatment of children with some
form of disabilities.
• Most interventionists take time to get to know the family members of their patients.
• Knowing the family and how they do their things at home enables interventionists to address the problem
facing their patients in a more accurate manner.
• The interventionists dealing with young children prefer to treat their patients at home because most of the
young children often make progress when taught or coached in their homes (Special Education Guide, 2019).
• Most of the time family members are unsure whether their patients are suffering from the effects of substance
abuse or not.
• Therefore, interventionists will provide the family with warning signs once they get to meet the patient thus
clearing their doubt.
Family Strengths are identified and
emphasized
• After an interventionist pays a visit to the family of his or her patient, he or she is supposed to know each

member of that particular home or environment.
Understanding each member will enable him/her (the interventionist) to identify the strengths and
weaknesses of the family which might directly affect the patient.
The specialist will consider a number of factors/issues when determining an effective way to approach
the patient.
The interventionist will then ask questions to do with the family’s lifestyle, emotional stability, their
relationship with the patient, any present stressors (if any) and the person’s demeanor.
The interventionist is then supposed to teach effective and safe intervention techniques to the family
members who are directly in contact with the patient (Elkins, 2018).
He or she goes ahead and start his or her intervention to help improve the status of the patient by
working closely with the family to eliminate their weaknesses while building/improving on their strengths.
Families are actively included in planning
and decision-making
• The interventionist usually visits the family within a few hours.
• The family is left to take care of their member most of the time if the patient is nursed/confined at their home.
• Therefore, families are supposed to be actively included in the planning and decision-making process on matters of how the intervention will
be conducted to achieve successful treated of their patient.
• This step is important because it enables the interventionist to create a safe environment for both the patient and the rest of the family.
• Lastly, planning enables the family members to come up with the best mechanism to be used in helping their patient recover from the
condition.
• Decision making improves knowledge of the family in handling the patient and finally, it also improves patient satisfaction.
• It is therefore very important when dealing with a substance abuse patient for the family to be open and honest to the interventionists if at all
they want to achieve successful results for their family member.
• Honesty will enable everyone to work successfully with the help of...
