The concept of ‘evil’ is increasingly gaining interest among legal, moral and political
philosophers. Numerous atrocities of the past two centuries have motivated journalists, social
scientists, non-specialists and politicians to try deciphering and mitigating horrors of the past one
hundred years. Events such as the 9/11 Attacks, the Rwandan genocide, Myanmar deaths and
killings in the Congo arbitrated by child soldiers have left more questions than answers.
Humankind is capable of unthinkable actions which cause pain and suffering to populations. In a
broad sense, the actions of evildoers are seen as a disposition in character within their makeup.
However, perpetrators of evil are relatively ordinary people. In the book ‘The Lucifer Effect,' a
concept formulated by Phil Zimbardo, rational individuals are capable of transforming into brutal
people when influenced by certain external and situational forces. Evil is executed by ordinary
people prompted by certain social-political ideologies that lead to performing horrific acts, which
they think are normal.

What motivates ordinary people to commit evil actions? This is a contentious question which is
complicated by the history of mass murders by humans to humans. Evil is described as the
inability to empathize with others, resulting in one to put their needs first (Zambardo 5). History

forces. However, from a simplistic view, characters can be dichotomized as ‘good’ or ‘evil’. The
justice system in many countries operates under this misconception that people who commit

These were good people with the right intentions towards each other. A particular transformation
