Effect on the Earth
Hurricane Katrina that occurred in August 2005 in the southeastern United States is
among the deadliest hurricanes that have ever struck the country. The aftermath impact on earth
was the existence of elevated concentrations of lead and arsenic throughout New Orleans. The
soils from the more deprived areas of the city exhibited the highest frequency. According to
Slattery et al. (2010), the concentration of lead was way above the recommended regulatory
threshold for safety with the oldest parts of the city, recording the most substantial amount. The
presence of lead in the soil has adverse impacts on the city residents, more so children, who
came back to their homes after evacuations. The oil that came from disabled refineries, sunken
boats, and ruptured pipelines, as well as bacteria from the sewage system and toxic chemicals
from industrial plants, drifted into the soil, Gulf of Mexico, and water sources.
Hurricane Katrina flooded five Superfund sites in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana,
