Purpose
Dietary issues have been a major concern in the twenty first century as a result of the rise
in the number of lifestyle related diseases. The concern has moved from being a professional
concern to where numerous people in the population seek for ways to ensure that their diets are
healthy and that they are living healthy lifestyles. However with the myriad of information out
there, people tend to get carried away with a lot of common misunderstanding on what a healthy
diet is, struggle with unhealthy eating habits without really knowing what healthy eating is all
about. The purpose of this report is to persuade dietitians and anyone interested in eating healthy
that there is need to look at the area of healthy diet and learn more about it. This will go long
way in demystify some of the common misunderstanding that are held, identify types of
unhealthy eating habits, diseases associated with unhealthy diet, know how to eat healthy and the
practices that should be adopted.
Common Misunderstanding of Healthy Diet
As people pursue healthy diets, they encounter many misconceptions and
misunderstanding in their paths on what a healthy diet is. These misconception lead to the
elimination of certain foods, following certain strict rules and so forth which generally do not
contribute towards a healthy diet. Some of these include;
There has been a major misconception of rejecting fat where it is believed that low fat
leads to the loss of fat. However a study conducted for eight years and bringing together 50, 000
women shows that adopting a low fat diet did not reduces their chances of heart disease, breast
cancer or colorectal cancer. In this study half of the women adopted the low fat diet while the
rest did not, however when compared to those that did not adopt the diet, their chances were still
the same and they also did not report significant weight loss if any (Brodwin, 2017). Although

fat has been vilified as unhealthy, there are certain healthy fats drawn from such sources as nuts,
avocadoes, fish and so forth. When taken in moderation, the fats are healthy and should not be
eliminated from the diet.
Skipping Breakfast is another common misunderstanding of healthy diet as people seek
to minimize their food intake. However as the Nestle company (n.d) indicates, skipping breakfast
leads to starvation which forces the person to binge the next time they eat. Therefore when a
person skips breakfast they force their body to starve for about 12-18 hours and the result is
overeating. Further the excess is turned and stored in the body as fat beating the motivation for
the meal skipping.
Eating without carbohydrate where people believe that carbohydrates make them fat and
thus choose to eliminate them from their diets. However as Kealey (2019) indicate, although
some people could have attained successful weight loos by adopting a carb-free diet,
carbohydrates are not what make ...
