Signs that mentor-protégé relationship should end
Mentoring relationship ends at some point in time with most citing the issue on
mentors tending to become possessive of their protégés while also stifling their growth. Most
mentors expect protégés to listen to them throughout their careers, but the gaining of
independence by the protégé makes the mentor think it as a betrayal. Relationships are hard,
and breakups are inevitable. Mentoring is similar to any other form of relationship that has a
beginning and an end with signs showing towards the end of the relationship (Gandhi &
Johnson, 2016). A protégé begins seeing signs that their mentoring relationship is ending.
The signs are:
The protégé is no longer growing
The protégé no longer does what is required
Inexistence of productive meetings
Many rescheduling or cancellations of planned meetings
Difference between privacy and confidentiality when dealing with a protégé
Despite its interchangeable use among most people, privacy and confidentiality are
different in a mentoring relationship. Privacy is the freedom a protégé has from intrusion into
his or her matters and information while confidentiality is the personal information a protégé
shares with his or her mentor. Confidentiality is considered a form of ethical duty, whereas
