Economic History of Medieval Britain
Around the globe, the Middle Ages was an interesting time of discovery given that most
parts around the world were rural, with the society being predominantly observant of hierarchical
structures. Although the political frameworks had significantly advanced from their simpleton
forms used during the ancient period, the lives of most people had negligibly transformed. In
Europe and particularly Britain, the middle ages signified a dynamic period, one that was
recognized for its technological creativity and economic dynamism, the growth of numerous
influential institutions, and expansion of commerce, advancements that were criticized by
renaissance authors among other subsequent critics who consider the period to have witnessed
massive cultural and economic stagnation. According to Hudson (42), the Middle Ages played a
valuable role in the growth and transformation of Britain and Europe in general, for it is based on
the distinctive institutions that were created in the era, that massive growth and positive
transformation was realized in the subsequent mercantilist and industrial periods. An analysis of
medieval Britain economic history reveals the expansion of agriculture, intensification of trade
and investment in industrial technology, as well as the establishment of feudalism as economic
conditions and the social institution that were responsible for the growth and development of the
region over the subsequent years.

longest empires to ever be established on the land, relied on agriculture as its primary form of
sustenance to the extent that it implemented an economic and social organization meant to cater
for agricultural needs dubbed the manorial system (Neal and Cameron 44- 45). Under the given
system, parcels of land were regarded as a manor, with the owner who was referred to as “the
lord of the manor” accumulating his riches from the contributions of the land as well as the
peasants who dwelt in it. Peasant farmers popularly referred to as “Serfs,” dwelt in the land and
paid homage to the Lord in the form of loyalty, labor, and submission.
Conferring to Pirenne (57), the manorial system perfectly exemplified the traditional
economic system that was associated with rural economies due to the dominant reliance on
farming and agriculture as the primary form of income. In the context of Britain, as a result of
the manor division, lords embraced an open field system that led to the realization of better
farming techniques. Under the circular flow model, increased labor services is associated with
