Global Politics: Gender, Media, and Development Research Paper There are a multitude of organizations that work to alleviate poverty and suffering in the developing world. Each student will be responsible for a research paper on a global actor and its influence on the world community. This global actor should be a Non-governmental organization (NGO) or a small committee or sub-group of a larger International Governmental Organization (IGO). We have provided a list of possible organizations below, but students may get other organizations approved by the professors for this project. The contents of the research paper can be divided into three parts. In the first part (2 pages maximum) you will provide an overview of the organization (include information like the organization’s mission, age, where they are located, size of the organization, and where they are active). The second part of the paper (4-5 pages) you can discuss one or a few issues/projects your organization is working on (describe the issue that they are working on—what do you think the causes are of the problem/why have organizations stepped into help, what is the organization doing about this issue—i.e. the project, and what is your assessment of their work--their successes and obstacles to success). You need to place emphasis not only on a good description of the issue/project, but also on the reasons/causes behind the issue. In the final section (3-4 pages) of the paper we would like you to consider how individuals may get involved to help further the goals of the organization/cause (volunteer, fundraising, spreading awareness, and internship/job opportunities), be inventive and use your critical thinking. Graduate students are encouraged to get involved in some way with their organization, whether through fundraising, spreading awareness or volunteer hours. The final section for graduate students should be between 5 to 7 pages, and should include a well-developed exposition of actions taken. For undergraduates, the paper is worth 80 points: it should be 10 pages in length, excluding a cover page. For graduate students, the paper is worth 100 points and should be 15 pages in length excluding a cover page. Papers must be double-spaced, with normal margins, and twelve-point font type. A minimum of eight sources are needed in your paper (use a variety of sources: books, articles, videos and other internet resources—the organization’s website). For questions regarding how to properly cite sources please use MLA or APA styles (See Purdue’s Owl Writing Lab for instructions on either style). Please provide a title page and bibliography with your paper. Additionally, we encourage students to use headings throughout the paper. Headings help the writing process as well as the reader make sense and organize the information provided in the research paper. For an example of headings take note of the headings used by Handelman in the reading assignments for this class. Students will sign up for their organization during week three so that no two research projects are the same. Global Actors: Giving Children Hope Students can propose additional organizations. From the EnglishClub.com http://www.englishclub.com/writing/plagiarism-citation.htm Proper Citation Give credit where credit is due (English proverb) to cite (verb): to acknowledge (give credit to) the original author or artist by providing a reference citation (noun): a properly formatted line of text that indicates the source for a quote, idea, fact etc. that you use What to Cite The following examples require proper citation using an appropriate style manual such as the MLA. These are the main items that require citation. • • • • • Direct quotes: phrases, sentences, or sections copied directly from a text; cite with quotation marks (use a limited amount of text, not a full text) Learn how to use quotation marks. Paraphrased text: sections of your writing that are based on research (not common knowledge) but written in your own words (not in quotes) Facts and Figures: numbers, percentages, and facts that have been collected by an exclusive source (such as during an experiment or poll) Theories, methods, and ideas: any original idea or thought that you find during your research and present in your writing Images, graphs, illustrations: always follow copyright rules when using images, including those you find online Example direct quote: "English as a Second Language and English as a Foreign Language are used interchangeably by many teachers, despite the obvious distinction." (Brown 55) Example paraphrasing: In the US many teachers use the term ESL, while in Europe, where people speak many languages, teachers often use the term EFL. (Brown 57) *Note: The above example might be considered "common knowledge" by some people. If you knew the information before your research, you do not need to cite it. If you use a direct quote that is common knowledge you do need to cite it. In an essay or research paper you need to include two types of citation. One is short form and the other is detailed. 1. In-text citation Stick to the "three word" rule of thumb. Never copy more than three words in a row from a research source when you put something into your own words. The format for in-text citation differs depending on the style guide you use. The modern approach based on MLA uses parenthetical citation. Type the author's last name and the page # you referred to in brackets after a quote or paraphrased section. e.g. (Adams 22) If no author is available indicate the work in another short form way. e.g. (EnglishClub.com, Learner Section) 2. Works Cited (Bibliography) The second type of citation is the more detailed version of the reference. This appears at the end of an essay or paper. It includes all of the information about the source, including the author, title, page numbers, and date of publication. e.g. Adams, Sherry. "Why Learn Grammar?" Global News Daily. June 2009. A 15. Ask your teacher which of the following titles to use: • • • • Works Cited Bibliography Sources References What NOT to Cite "It is better to be safe than sorry." You do not need to cite everything in your paper or essay. If you are unsure, include the citation anyway. Here are a few things that do NOT require citation. • • • • common knowledge: basic information that can be found in a lot of places and is wellknown historical dates: this is public information that does not need to be cited a well-known argument or theory: an idea/issue that is commonly discussed or debated a universal proverb: age old proverbs or sayings, such as "Give credit where credit is due."

GLOBAL ACTORS: GIVING CHILDREN HOPE
Part One- Global Actor: Giving Children Hope
Global actors like Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), International Governmental
Organizations (IGOs) or small committee or sub-groups have provided significant support to
vulnerable populations, thus enhancing their stability. Vulnerable groups such as children, people
with disabilities, men, and women living in poverty have all benefited from the initiatives that
these global actors have been conducting. Giving Children Hope (GCHope) is an example of a
non-governmental organization that aids in alleviating poverty by offering disaster relief,
vocational training, as well as health and community development.
With the collaboration of local and global communities, the faith-based organization
focuses on families as a way of targeting children, especially those living poor living conditions.
The mission of GCHope is providing sustainable hope through the creation of wellness
programs. Part of the mission is performing disaster response activities by gathering nutritious
foods, medical resources, and basic necessities. The organization has managed to achieve its
mission ever since it was founded in 1993 by founders, John Ditty and Juliana Reasor (Giving
Children Hope, 2019). During this time they were in the process of adopting their son in Russia.
Russia was experiencing severe famine, and many families had a rough time trying to survive.
Apart from the famine, the citizens were experiencing a hard time trying to access medical
necessities. From such encounters, the founders saw the need for helping children by donating
medical supplies and equipment in hardship areas to alleviate poverty, diseases, and injuries,
among other issues.
The organization is a registered 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization located at Buena Park,
Common Wealth Avenue in California. This means that based on the US Internal Revenue Code,
GCHope is exempted from paying federal taxes (Child & Grønbjerg, 2007). Most importantly, it

is worth noting that the leadership in this organization has also supported the incredible work in
this global actor. Taking a look at the current acting chief executive officer, Joe Schoeningh, he
has helped in ensuring that the organization expands its mission in the streets and globally.
Further, the organization also has a board of directors where Rob Burns is the chairman of the
board. The board members provide essential views in the direction that the organization should
take in achieving its mission. To date, the organization is 26 years old, and there have been
tremendous achievements since it was founded. The achievements have been as a result of the
value that the organization has in listening to the needs of communities in developing countries
instead of imposing their ideas on the populations (GCHope, 2019). Although the organization is
just a non-profit charity organization, the donations from well-wishers have helped the agency to
offer support globally to poverty-stricken countries. It occupies a 43,000 sq. foot firm and has a
warehouse that has containers full of medical supplies and relief aid which they distribute all
over the world. The partnership of GCHope with other large agencies which work with single
communities has promoted growth in this organization.
Overall, the organization is active, considering that many families are benefiting from the
services that GCHope is offering. Still, the organization is creating opportunities for volunteers
to offer their support in major initiatives through a volunteering calendar which offers
opportunities for various groups and individuals. Such opportunities are a success due to the
orientation programs that the organization provides to willing participants. Generally, the efforts
have promoted family stability, self-sufficiency as well as economic independence in targeted
regions. Countries like Ghana, Malawi, Bosnia, Russia, Ukraine, and Liberia, among others,
have benefited from the medical clinics and enterprises that the organization has set up in those
areas. Fortunately, this has helped many children to grown up in stable environments.
