HOMEWORK EXAMPLE

1) Define CAM.

CAM stands for complementary and alternative medicine. CAM consists of many different therapies and treatments that are used to prevent and treat illness and disease. These methods are not typically taught in Medical school or practiced by Western medical doctors. Various practices use natural methods or substances to promote the body to heal or stay in harmony. The mind body and spirit of a person are brought into the equation of healing. (Falvo, pp.210-211, 2004)

Critical thinking:(LABEL THIS)

For example, Chiropractic, homeopathy, naturopathy, yoga, meditation and energy fields are some of the therapies used in CAM. I had a patient with diabetes and used to also get nutritional work completed by a Chiropractor that helped to control his blood sugar.

Please include both your research from your readings and critical thinking/ examples.

1. CAM stands for Complementary and Alternative Medicine; it refers to all the medical
practices and procedures, which are not part of the usual medical care standards and
strategies. CAM consists of therapies as well as treatments, which treat illnesses as well as
diseases, and these, are not the usual ones taught in the normal curriculum. Instead, natural
methods and materials are used to help the body stay in harmony and to bring the human
body into healing (Brosnan, Vuolanto, & In Brodin, 2018). CAM employs complementary
medicine, integrative medicine, alternative medicine, and standard medical care.
2. CAM is mostly used by women and also by people why have high levels of education and
also high levels of income. The method most times tends to be more costly than the normal
therapies, explaining why the high-income earners use the method more often. At the same
time, Medicare does not cater for the same so it limits the low-income earners who may
prefer to use the same for medical covers. Exposure to more information by the more learned
also causes them to use the same more. Women also tend to use methods such as acupuncture
more than men.
3. Some of the common misconceptions about CAM are:

Some people assume that CAM is only available as an alternative while the fact is
that the practitioners who offer the treatment are in most cases medical doctors
and medical practitioners who are fully trained (Cuellar, 2006).

Some people also assume that alternative medicine does not work while in reality
most of the methods such as acupuncture are tested scientifically.

Another misconception is that the big medical firms are against alternative
medicine while in reality, the key insurers in America pay for alternative
medicine.
