Description

Prepare slides.

Include the following information and address the following questions in your final presentation:

  • Include detailed speaker notes.
  • What are the geological features of the selected region where your organism dwells?
  • What life exists in your chosen region? List the top 10 prevalent marine organisms from your chosen region.
  • Select a marine organism from the region and discuss its adaptation to the environment due to two of the major environmental problems facing our oceans today: global climate change and plastic pollution.
  • Discuss its relationship to the other organisms that live in the same food chain.
  • Include future adaptations.
  • How do the currents and tides affect your selected animal?
  • Select the same animal as you did earlier in this assignment or another animal from the same region and hypothesize how it may need to adapt in the future due to natural circumstances or pollution. Will your chosen species in fact, be able to adapt to such rapid changes or go extinct?

Marine Pollution Jeremy Fryman SCI 209 June 23, 2019 Dr. Bob Griffin Oceana Brief description of and Mission Statement ❖ Oceana is a non-profiteering Organization that deals with conservation of the marines with the focus being on influencing various policies on the national level (Danson, 2011). ❖ It aims at restoring and preserving the global oceans. ❖ This Organization is headquartered in Washington, D.C. ❖ Oceana was established in the year 2001 by leading foundation groups; Oak Foundation, The Pew Charitable Trust, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Sandler Foundation, and Marisla Foundation. Type of marine pollution addressed ❖ Oceana has been campaigning on responsible fishing through combating and restoring the fisheries across the world. ❖ Legislations help in limiting overfishing and other contaminations in marine (Frank, 2009). ❖ Plastics are significant pollutants in the marine environment; thus Ocean focusses on reducing its production, mainly on usage of single-use plastics. ❖ Fraud of seafood is another campaign by Oceana whereby some people mislabel the fish, which at times is harmful to the consumers. ❖ Ocean also fights against setting industries near the marine environs, which are the leading cause of ocean acidification. Regions where pollution is prevalent ❖ In line with the year 2014's report on plastic population, Mexico City and Santiago in Brazil are cities with a massive plastic scattering across the rivers and lakes. ❖ Due to the large population of industries, only 5% of wastes of plastics are recycled (Pauli, 2011). ❖ The vast number of tourists across the beaches have also steered towards the rise in the number of plastic wastes. Effects of the pollution to the surrounding environment ❖ Plastic wastages are among the many garbage which jeopardizes the natural ambiance of life in the marine. ❖ It disrupts the whole bio-geo cycle leading to unwanted issues to the entire marine eco-system (Danson, 2011). ❖ Plastic is a threatening situation to the existence of living things under water. ❖ According to a report in the year 2011 by Oceana, about 7000 sea bird and marine mammals were killed in the year 2010 only in Brazil, Chile, and Cuba. Measures that can be taken to avoid marine pollution by plastic in the future ❖ Plastic pollution is among the biggest ocean and marine life threats across the world. ❖ With skyrocketing production of plastics, there are low levels of recycling and poor management of wastes (Frank, 2009). ❖ Oceana started a research study in 2010 on plastic waste across Cuba, Jamaica which are major tourist destinations, and by the year 2012, the finding was 40,000 Metric tons of plastic had entered the oceans, rivers, and lakes. The following are ways that can reduce plastic pollution in the marine: ❖ Reducing usage of single-use plastics by minimizing if you need not use them. Single-use plastics include plastic bags, straws, the plastic cups, dry cleaning paper bags, the take out containers, water bottles, among others (Danson, 2011). ❖ As one of the core mission of Oceana, participation in cleaning the rivers and beach is a practice which helps remove plastics away from the ocean. This is a direct and most rewarding way of fighting plastic pollution in the sea (Pauli, 2011). ❖ Supporting the ban of plastic use by a member state is one way of discarding usage of plastics around marine environs (Frank, 2009). Oceana is one unique Organization that supports legislators in implementing policies favoring marine life. Using findings in reducing the reoccurrence of plastic pollution ❖ The findings from the mission are crucial because it will help in future research. ❖ The researchers will have a place to start investigating, for example, checking on the beaches and rivers which are infested with plastic wastes. ❖ Oceana among other Organizations can quickly seek grants to help in protecting the marine lives efficiently because the issue is in dire need of help ❖ The findings will help enlighten the public by educating them on the need to adopt a plastic-free lifestyle. The data given on the deaths caused by the plastic wastes in the oceans is clear evidence of the need to protect the marine environment. References Danson, T. (2011). Sharks in Arizona Marine Habitat

• Arizona was shaped by geological events

Arizona:
Geological
Features

that spanned up to 1.8 million years
(Reynolds et al., 2013). The rich fossil
history determines the environment today.
• The Sonoran desert is one of the sources of
the increased variety in ecosystems and
organisms among Arizona’s wildlife.
• The sea water varies in aspects such as pH,
salinity and temperature so that there is a
wide range of marine life in the Arizona
water bodies.

Arizona:
Marine
Habitats

• Shark is the most common marine
fish in Arizona and destinations such
as Sealife are places where one can
get to experience marine life in
Arizona.
• The Sea of Cortez is an example of
marine habitat, albeit outside
Arizona, it is within the Sonoran
Desert and hosts the Arizona’s
sharks including the black tip reef
shark, the zebra shark, the bamboo
shark and the white tip reef shark.
• Aquaria are thus the most common
places to find shark in Arizona.
Within Arizona, there mostly are
permanent and seasonal rivers
owing to the desert climate.

Marine Life

• Fishes:
Fish are a common form of marine
organisms. There are numerous types of
marine fish in the Arizona seas and
oceans. The rich fossil history of Arizona
may explain the large variety of fish that
you can find in the springs, pools and
rivers in the area.
• Dolphins
Dolphins are sea mammals, also common
to Arizona. Dolphins are mainly in seas
and oceans and areas such as Gulf of
California and the Sea of Cortez host
Arizona’s dolphins.
