- 2x - 39 = x

The main idea behind these types of problems is to get all the x's on one side of the equation and all the numbers on the other side.

-2x - 39 = x       First add 2x to both sides of the equation.

-2x - 39 + 2x = x + 2x     Cancel out 2x on left hand side of equation and simplify right side of equation.

-39 = 3x       Divide both sides by 3 to get your answer.

-13=x
